Sunday afternoons on Andrews Road

The Skaneateles Polo Club has been part of this community since the early 1960s β€” one of the few polo clubs in all of New York State, tucked into the hills about a mile south of the village.

Every Sunday in July and August, spectator-friendly matches bring teams from across eastern North America β€” Cleveland, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Buffalo, and Aiken, South Carolina all make the trip, and the club plays benefit matches for local charities all season long. Admission is free. Pack a picnic and a lawn chair, and after the match the kids can meet the horses.

A storied history

Polo runs deep in Skaneateles β€” a few of the milestones along the way.

1920s
Skaneateles's first polo player, Lt. Alexander Sinclair Reynolds, takes up the sport in the U.S. Army β€” and plays on a championship Hawaiian team alongside a young George S. Patton.
1962
Don Cross, Peter Winkelman, Tim Gridley and Dwight Winkelman bring polo to Skaneateles and build the club's first field.
1972
The club builds the regulation field still in play today, opening it with a match against the Cleveland Polo Club.
1976
Longtime member and teacher David O. Chase captains the U.S. polo team at the Montreal Olympics, where polo was an exhibition sport.
1985
CBS Evening News airs a national feature on the Skaneateles Polo Club.
Today
Under president Marty Cregg, the club still plays free Sunday matches every July and August β€” and benefit games for local charities, carrying on a tradition more than sixty years strong.

As featured on CBS Evening News (1985) and in the Syracuse Post-Standard.
